Automaticity
What is Automaticity? The term automaticity is used to describe when a person knows facts "like the back of their hand." For example, when a student is asked their age, they are able to recite the answer with no hesitation.
In third grade, the focus for automaticity is multiplication. Students should come to third grade with automaticity in both addition and subtraction. This means that students should be able to quickly recite the answers to single digit addition, subtraction and multiplication problems. To document student progress in automaticity, we will be having timed tests. The test consists of fifty multiplication problems to be done within 5 minutes. When a student masters a math concept with automaticity they will be assigned a harder concept for their automaticity practice/test (after multiplication comes division).
Students are encouraged to practice at home with mom and dad. Here are a few ways you can practice.
